Gary R. Trombley is the principal of Trombley & Hanes, P.A. For the past 44 years he has concentrated his legal practice in the area of federal and state criminal investigations, trials and complex civil litigation.

A True Floridian

Born in Tampa, Florida, in 1946, Gary has a degree from the College of Business at the University of South Florida and a law degree from Stetson University College of Law. While attending Stetson, he was a member of the Editorial Board of the Law Review and Phi Delta Phi. Upon graduation from Stetson, he became an Assistant United States Attorney in the Middle District of Florida, and served in that capacity from 1973 to 1977. As an Assistant United States Attorney, he was responsible for the prosecution of complex criminal cases and received the Attorney General’s “Outstanding Performance in Trial Practice Award”. In 1977, he entered private practice. Gary has participated as defense counsel in many complex federal and state criminal cases. Gary defended one of the largest criminal cases identified as “The Bank of Credit and Commerce.” This case is featured at the Federal Courthouse, Tampa in the “Historical Exhibits” of major cases tried in the Federal Middle District of Florida. Gary in 2010 completed a successful defense in the U.S. v. Singer, et al. case in South Carolina arising out of charges of conspiracy to commit securities fraud.

Associations

Gary is a member of the Florida Bar, the Colorado State Bar, and the United States District Courts for the Northern, Middle and Southern Districts of Florida, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court. He is named in the The Best Lawyers of America 1987-2017, Chambers U.S.A. 2004-2015, a member of Florida Trend’s Legal Elite, and recognized by Florida Super Lawyers publication.

Gary has served on various committees of the federal, state, and local bar associations, including The American Bar Association, Criminal Justice Section; White Collar Crime Committee; President of the Trial Lawyers Section of the Hillsborough County Bar Association; Chairman of the Thirteenth Circuit Judicial Nominating Committee, and Criminal Law Committee. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Florida Bar from 1985-1989 and served on the Board’s Legislative Committee. Gary has been certified as a Federal arbitrator in the Middle District of Florida.

Gary is also a member of the Florida Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and past President of the Herbert G. Goldburg Criminal Law American Inn of Court Middle District of Florida. He is active in various educational and community affairs and organizations, including past President of Stetson College of Law Lawyers Association; Member of the Board of Overseers- Stetson College of Law; Recipient of the Stetson Paul M. May Mentorious Award and the Jimmy Kynes in the Trenches Award; Member of the President’s Council of the University of South Florida; Chairman of the “Law Society” of the University of South Florida; and Stetson College of Law Dean’s Circle. Recently in 2010 Gary was inducted in the “Stetson College of Law Hall of Fame.”

In July 2016 Gary was inducted into the “International Academy of Trial Lawyers.”

The Community

Gary is very active in the community with charitable organizations. He has endowed a professorship at Stetson College of Law named The White Collar Crime Chair to enable a named professor to continue the study and reporting of national crime matters.
